Another strange contradiction: Escorts are very independent-minded business owners who don’t want to get into relationships, yet they have a large number of male “friends” that like to “help them out” and care for them despite knowing they’re not going to get much or anything in return. Why the heck should a sex worker get paid any more than any other unskilled job? They don’t have the credentials, bona fides, pedigrees and there are no barriers to entry. At least gambling and drug dealing have become somewhat legitimate, albeit still associated with unscrupulous behavior. Sex work legitimization (ie decriminalization) just can’t be everything that the women want. And I think that if it were decriminalized, regulations would probably drive a lot of women out of the business because they would set standards for health testing, ethical practices, taxation, safety for workers and clients, etc. This could even mean obtaining some kind of state licensure that a lot of ladies with felonies might not be able to obtain.
