Is it tacky?

17 posts in this topic

I recently got into google analytics for another project I'm working on and when I looked into the analytics on my own site I was floored with the amount of traffic I receive monthly. It got me thinking...why don't I have ads on my own site? Would this be considered tacky? Would it be a turn off for potential clients? Are there any other providers who do this? Thanks folks and happy Friday.

Can only answer for myself, but no, not tacky and not a turnoff. Actually I would just see it as a further indication that you are intelligent (taking advantage of good opportunity), thus moving you ever higher up the "some day" list. :D

p.s.: Not to mention - tacky? - in this industry's advertising?? That would be a stunner!

You might want to think about what type of ads you include and the type of traffic they might bring. I don't necessarily see it as tacky but it could cause issues for you and/or the visitors to your site.

What are these ads you are talking about? Haven't seen one in years. AdBlock to the rescue!

The ads wouldn't bring traffic to my site; they would divert it by advertising on my site for another site/product. I've found a few adult advertising networks I'm looking into. Just like google ads, they figure out what are the best ads for my site.

Tacky indeed.

I exit a provider site if it contains ads.

Tacky, Tacky, Tacky.

Not tacky, but also not much benefit to you. I, just like 99.99% of everyone else, would not click on the ads. And the .01% who does probably won't generate enough revenue for you to even make it worth the hassle.

I, personally, don’t see that as tacky. However, as someone else pointed out, it might not have a click-through rate that would make it worthwhile for you. Since you’re becoming an analytics geek (and welcome to the club!), you should do some research into how much revenue can be generated, what kinds of ads you would have (big hint, don’t have popups, and any ads must open in another window. You don’t want someone to be taken away from your site), and whether the ads that pay more would even be available to an adult site. But really, why not? Even if it only pays your web fees it’s well worth it. And you’re not in business for fun, are you? Well, not JUST for fun :)

I would not see this as tacky if it was done correctly and elegantly. Stay away from pop ups and any video ads or anything with sound. I would start small in amount and size of ads and see what happens. I would also check to see if you get paid just for hosting and presenting the ads with a kick up in price for a click through.

I agree that popups, videos, or anything that is annoying and detracts from the user experience is the last thing I want. I was thinking of sidebar ads. Nothing ostentatious other than my lascivious pictures. Some months I get 10-15,000 unique users from India alone! Sadly, that is one of the lowest paying countries for ad revenue but like Swildon01 said, if I can cover my yearly hosting fee that'd be great! :D

I view my site as an ad in and of its self so I figured it wouldn't be that offensive. Essentially it would be an ad containing ads. The nature of my site is to sell a service so I'm already in the "I wanna sell you something" boat.

A lot of escort sites do have ads and it's never bothered me. Just no pop ups and things like you said.

I don't see it as particularly offensive, and I don't begrudge you making some money, but those Ashley Madison pop-ups are DANGEROUS.

Here is the difference as I see it. your site is offering a service I actually want to purchase. a service that is unavailable from any other source. other items or services offered on your site I can find and probably already purchase elsewhere. your site sells because it offers a "one of a kind" service. in short I only visit a provider web site to purchase time and companionship but I wouldn't find other ads tacky.

I agree with the people who have said you may not get a lot of benefit from a pay-per-click type of ad on your site. However, if you went to a pay-per-impression you might see some benefit if you are really getting the type of unique visitors you stated earlier. The payout of those is a lot less, but to get the impressions some advertisers might be willing to pay for that feature.
