What would you do if this happened?

Ok ok ok....let me set the stage...

So say you've been dreaming of  big juicy t-bone stake all day, you know it is expensive, but you saved up for a long time, you made a reservation at Del Frisco's.  You know exactly what you want,  no need for a menu. You order the 24 oz. T-bone with a side of creamy garlic mashed potatoes, dripping in butter and butter slathered green beans.

You can't wait....

Waiter shows up takes the silver cover off your plate. He then apologizes and says "sorry sir, we are out of T-bones, so I brought you a big pink tuna steak instead."

Now this alternate looks quite tasty too, thick slab of tuna, red and moist in the center with a side of sweet potatoes with a dollop of sour cream and side of asparagus.

It is great looking in its own right,  but it is no t-bone, and not what you wanted or asked for.

So what do you do.

1) Take the tuna, enjoy it but leave a little disappointed that it wasn't what you wanted?

2) Say no thanks, this isn't what I wanted, politely leave and go to Ruth Chris' for the steak you really wanted?

Inspiring minds want to know

Personally i would leave the fact that they did not tell me when I ordered they didn't have it would piss me off...and then the fact you just brought me what you think I wanted would be strike 2 .... I would leave and give waiter and manager a piece of my mind!

Straight up. In a restaurant, if I'm jonesing for a particular dish, if the place is out of it for the night the server should just be straight up with me that they don't have it. If they just ran out, come back to me, tell me you are out, and I'll decide if I want to try something different or just pay for my drinks and leave. But don't just cook something else, bring it to me, and think I will accept it. If I want beef, I want beef. If I want fish, I'll order fish.

If the question is an allegory for the hobby, however, my answers are slightly different. A girl isn't a slice of meat after all...

I would send the tuna back as ask about the best steak, if not satisfied with the answer leave and go to another steak house.

I don't think you are really talking about either a steak or a restaurant, are we, Mikey?

Thank the waiter for his thoughtfulness, offer a suggestion or two regarding future career choices (staff and management), request suggestions for any real restaurants nearby, leave quietly. Perhaps enjoy a pleasant dinner somewhere else, probably even more because of the contrast between the two experiences.

Having been in business for many years I know how difficult it is to keep everything running properly (good help, inventory up to date, suppliers, etc). I also know that most people will understand when a problem occurs, but only when we are open and honest about it up front instead of trying the back door treatment.

Haven't really enjoyed a restaurant meal much in years. Bubble-gummer hostesses addressing a male-female couple as "you guys", wait staff ignoring empty water glasses and coffee cups, requesting something and waiting endlessly to receive it (if ever), serving plates allowed to stack up on the table until you can't find a place to set your beverage down.

I could buy a restaurant if I wanted one, but I know that the only way to run it properly would leave me open to complaints about a "hostile work environment" from entitled "me first" types who applied for a job but can't be bothered with working for the paycheck, or showing up every day on time, or making it through a two-minute conversation with a customer without checking their text messages.

Stopped in at a Waffle House recently for a mid-morning breakfast. Just eggs, hash browns, toast, sausage and coffee in a venue not usually associated with upscale food or service. Waitress was on the ball and took good care of me, and the cook turned out a nicely presented simple meal. Ticket totaled about $10. I tipped the waitress $20 and gave the cook a $20 also.

Thanks for all the thoughts. It was not quite a restaurant and not a hobby thing, but it could be applied to almost any category.

You wanted something, you asked for something, you got something different. It wasnt bad just not what you wanted.

In a restaurant, this would never happen. They'd tell you, upfront, that they were out of 24 oz T-bone.

As an allegory for the escort business, it's passable. I might leave, or I might stay. It depends on the girl, and price, presented to me. Either way, I'm writing a review. ;)

objection sustained...

counselor please get to the point you are trying to make...

or are you asking us to hijack the thread and start guessing? is that what this is?  a bait and switch interpretation parable? ooohhhh, ok, i'll play:

1. you set up a date based on profile and pics, and the gal who showed up wasn't what you 'expected'?

Well, if that’s what we’re talking about, this is exactly what has happened to me on every first visit I can think of! This has not necessarily been a bad thing but I guess I must have an over-active imagination.

Sustsined.

Original question was not about hobby or food, but it was easiest to explain that way. Where people take it is up to them.

But let's play. If this were related to the hobby how would you handle it? Me,  unless what I was greeted with was just something I didn't like I would move forward and still enjoy it.

you and me both - and i bet were not alone...an overactive imagination and what you were led to believe balance on a fragile fulcrum...

i have fallen prey to many o' first date of the same type - and like you they weren't all bad for sure:)

but i have turned and walked away from a few first dates for this reason too - everyone has a limit on how far they'll bend before they break...
