Posted February 10, 2014 Does anybody use a Google Voice number for hobbying? https://support.google.com/voice/answer/150640?hl=en It's a great resource for hobbying, although the subscriber number appears on your phone bill. If there isn't a chance the SO will open your bill (or look at your online statement) Google Voice is great. If there is a chance, you don't really gain anything from GV on the home front
Posted February 11, 2014 I have a Google number that I use as a "home" phone: give to businesses and others that might robo-call, telemarket (GV has lots of nice "spam" blocking and levels of deterrence). Friends and family get the cell number. Have run into a number of providers that use it. Now, from a hobbyist angle, not sure I would want to use GV for hobbying. In theory, you are not supposed to have a fake name Google account, so that they can tie everything Google into Google+, and market you, and cross reference you, and... You get the idea. And with Google always wanting to tie you and everyone you know to your Google persona, who knows what changes in terms of service might happen down the road that might expose your identity and number, either or by Google or things like escort blacklist/blackmail sites? Haven't had the time to try it out, but if you have an iPhone, there is an app/service called Burner. You buy credits for X minutes and or N text messages via in-app purchase. You get a one-time use phone number to use as you see fit, until you use up your X minutes and or N texts. Kinda like Google Voice meets Snapchat.
Posted February 11, 2014 As a provider if I receive a call though Goggle voice I don't bother. Does not do much for screening unless a Jon wants to give his info, in which case Goggle Voice is moot. lilithia
Posted February 12, 2014 Does anybody use a Google Voice number for hobbying? https://support.google.com/voice/answer/150640?hl=en Knowing how Google tries to link everything together (similar to- Facebook) for marketing, I'll stick with the $10 throwaway phone.
Posted February 12, 2014 Has anyone tried spoofcard? http://www.spoofcard.com Looks pretty interesting, but lots of potential for abuse.
Posted February 12, 2014 Haven't had the time to try it out, but if you have an iPhone, there is an app/service called Burner. I've used it a bit. It seems to work as advertised. Still, I have a separate hobby phone. Things like Burner on a regular monthly contract phone aren't going to be as secure as a completely separate prepaid-in-cash phone. You're actually adding another party to the list of companies who know your number and who you called, so if the Burner company itself is compromised (or subpoenaed) you're less secure from that angle.
Posted February 12, 2014 +1 Nothing beats the throw-away phone, that get's recharged with cash.
Posted February 12, 2014 I'm single, and I use my Android smartphone as a portable office: banging hookers, work, etc. If a phone is an issue, maybe you need to start reevaluating your hobby activities.
