Sex Addiction

9 posts in this topic

So as I sit in my car with my heart in my throat waiting for my ultimate date to text me their room number, I start to ponder the idea of sex addiction? Is it a real thing or just something we’ve made up as an excuse for our depraved sexual appetite? What are your thoughts out there as a hobbyist or as a provider? What are the factors for addiction and can we apply it to sex?  Remember, that I’m not just counting sex, but masterbation and pornography use as part of the umbrella term of sex addiction.

Let your thoughts roll. Maybe you can help self-diagnose me 🤪

First I’d say, define addiction.  It can range from using a substance that alters your brain chemistry - think nicotine, alcohol and opioids - to obsessive behavior like gambling.  I think that you can get overly obsessed with anything that gives you pleasure.  You cross a line when you endanger yourself, your finances or your family.  Going to Vegas and placing a few bets within your budget - no problem.  Going to Vegas and betting your rent or mortgage payment- big problem that requires you to seek help.

I use the same analogy with sexuality.  I’ve met guys who lost jobs because they blew off too much time seeing providers; they went during the day to hide their hobby from a spouse, their boss warned them yet they still went. To my mind, they crossed into unhealthy obsession.  On the other hand , if you stay within reasonable boundaries as you define them then have fun and don’t worry about the prudes.

There is definitely sexual addiction. Gandalf has shown us how to know if it's an issue.

If it affects your life negatively, and yet you continue, you're addicted.
