Good points. I'm active only a few times per year in different towns. If I need references in town X I'll use references from towns A, B, and /or C. That seems to keep the competitive drama out of the equation. And I check to be sure the ladies are willing to provide references on me to the lady in town X. If the lady in town X won't accept out of town references I just move on and try someone else.
