Posted October 1 He was a great player but hate what he did with the betting.
Posted October 1 Pete's all time number of hits record will stand for years (if it is ever broken). A fierce, hardworking and talented competitor. The gambling on baseball really did him in. I wonder what would have happened if he would have admitted it sooner than he did. Though he gambled, I don't believe he ever did anything to throw a game.
Posted October 1 PR most definitely should be in the HOF! His record of 4256 hits will never be broken! (In order for that record to be broken a player's gotta average over 200 hits a year for 21 years!) THAT AIN'T NEVER GUNNA HAPPEN! Okay be gambled! But, he bet on his own team! If juicers like Big Pappy, Mike Piazza and Ken Caminity are in the HOF ... PR should be in there too! (Would BP, MP and KC have put up HOF #s ... if they weren't juiced-up?) Furthermore, I never saw Mike Piazza throw out a baserunner! And furthermore, before Big Pappy got on the juice and played for the Twins ... he was 20 HR, 72 RBI, .275 NOBODY!
Posted October 1 His gambling cost him a lot, but I believe it was his utter and complete lack of contrition that ultimately cost him any chance at the HOF.

Posted October 1 Unquestionably one of the all time greats. Had to love his hustle and dedication. But gambling on baseball and especially on his own team is unforgivable. He knew what he was doing and the consequences. Sad.

Betting on his own team when he was the manager who made decisions on pitchers, pinch hitters, who to keep fresh for what game etc. made his gambling MUCH more egregious that betting on other teams with no control. Simply unforgivable. FYI Ichiro already beat his record if including his professional career in Japan. One more hit in 200 fewer games. Someone else will come along and surpass them both.
Posted October 1 When Pete Rose managed the Reds it's true that he bet on his team. But he always bet on them to win. I think what Tim Donaghy did was far worse, betting on NBA games that he officiated. RIP Pete Rose HOF or not I admired his hustle.

No doubt Ichiro was a great hitter! No doubt Ichiro was a generational talent! But, there's a big difference between amassing your hits against Japanese pitchers verses getting your hits against MLB caliber pitchers! (There are .275 MLB, career journeymen going to Japan and winning batting titles!) The NPB league (Nippon Professional Baseball) and its pitching ... is essentially AAAA! (Somewhere between AAA and MLB!) And in today's game with the 6'3", 230 lbs, 100+ mph Dominican flamethrowers (think Aroldis Chapman) ... there's no way in Hell any hitter is gunna get 4256 hits! And, in today's game in order to break that record he's gunna have to be a straight-up singles hitter! (A dying breed!) For proper context in the evolution of MLB pitching and the prevalence of Dominican, 100-mph flamethrowers: It's not uncommon to see 95 mph CHANGEUPS! (Wrap your mind around THAT!)

As implausible as it may seem: Tim Donaghy claimed on 60 Minutes that although he bet $10,000 a game ... it never affected the way he actually refereed the game! (He claimed to be straight-up objective and unbiased in his calls!) He claimed he actually lost $$$ on games that he bet on and refereed! They can say what they want about Pete Rose ... he was a straight-up player! He bet his $$$ on himself and on his team to win! (He probably made street-smart bets on games where the Reds had a perceived edge! i.e. Pitching matchups! Injuries! Travel fatigue! Jet lag! Home-field, ground-crews' shenanigans**! Stadium bias (see Coors Field)! Weather conditions!) R.I.P. Charlie Hustle! You are worthy of The MLB Mount Rushmore! (If my $$$ is on line ... I'm penciling you in my lineup!) ** It's an open secret: The grounds crew of a team manicures and grooms the field (the grass, the pitchers' mound and the infield dirt) ... to suit the teams' strengths!
