Rethinking SESTA/FOSTA

Unfortunately they got the cart in front of the horse.  This study SHOULD have been conducted before passing SESTA/FOSTA for two reasons.  First to identify that online advertising was really the problem that needed solving.  And second to provide a baseline to measure the changes against.  This is what happens when Congress (or anyone else for that matter) reacts to feelings and anecdotal data instead of reason and facts.

You are of course absolutely correct if looking at the law from the perspective that the majority of legislators actually want to accomplish something good.  Sadly that is a fatal assumption because most are simply maintaining power and influence and party talking points.  Those behind the legislation and those who voted for it got photo ops and get to check a box that they are anti trafficking, pro women, blah blah.  From that perspective the law is a huge success.

The next thing coming:

Should the courts rule against the hotels the impact is obvious.  True trafficking - involving force, coercion or under age - should be vigorously prosecuted and stamped out and I celebrate whenever there is a story involving arrest of true trafficking operators.  But this action would attempt to stomp out consensual activities between consenting adults as well.  Once again those pushing the suit care more about appearances that actual facts.  Such is our twitter, sound bite driven world these days.

I totally agree.  Great photo-op, then crickets, for the lawmakers.

There goes that nooner with the hot co-worker at the No-Tel Motel.

Yes, true coerced trafficking is abhorrent!  But they keep lumping consensual transactions in with trafficking.
