Garden of the Gods Or Idaho Springs? // Altitude Sickness

12 posts in this topic

Since it is my first time here in CO, I would love to make some time to site see. I would hate to be here and sit in the room the whole time when I am surrounded by Pure beauty!! So I am in between visiting the Garden of the Gods or the Idaho Springs for the hot springs. Any suggestions? Or any other places I should look into? I think I am leaning towards the garden of the gods. I am a little nervous about the altitude though, as I can barley even breathe down here in Denver lol. I thought I was just out of shape but I guess there is a thing called mountain sickness that I never even knew existed 😂 thoughts ?

Neither that high up to cause mountain sickness. Take time to check them both out.

There are stores which sell canned O2.

Garden of the Gods for nature’s beauty.  Idaho Springs for shopping & food.

People who visit Leadville and areas that high may experience altitude sickness.  As JR, neither is high enough to cause altitude sickness.

Your body will adjust to the thinner air here sooner or later.

Remember to use sun screen as the sun is more intense here.

And drink water, lots of water.

Some people are more affected by high altitude. Garden of the Gods is about the same altitude as Denver, so go for that. Also, this time of year the Botanical Gardens are wonderful. Go early, while it is still cool, and stay for lunch at one of the great little cafes. No altitude problem, it is right here in town.

I wouldn't worry about altitude sickness. You need to be up higher in the mountains for that.  I got it once while hiking up to the tree line with a 100lb pack. Had been in Kansas 19 hrs earlier and went up 6000 feet in a few hours.  I will say the botanical gardens there are a nice escape like Bad Boy suggested. Though there is nothing like being up in the hills with the cool air and scent of pine in the air.  A trip to Central City will send you back in time, if you can avoid the casinos.  There was a place you could get a photo of yourself in period clothes. I was dressed like a preacher and my two friends were dressed as dance hall girls trying to seduce me. Sun block is your friend, stay hydrated in the low humidity  and  buy a good uv-blocking pair of sun glasses. My sister claimed the sun glasses kept you from squinting and therefore kept the crowd feet down.

Folks, I’ve been in CO since the 80’s. Worked above 8,000’ for years. But I now winter in the RGV (75’?).  When I return to CO each spring it takes me a few weeks to acclimate (headaches, short of breath, sinus issues, ...).  Add a few more when I visit my mountain cabin.

I’m not sure where the OP is from; her profile currently says Denver.  But her post says, “Since it is my first time here in CO,...” I’ll assume the flatlands or a coast.  Yes, it will take time to adjust even to Denver.

fixed it for ya ;)

To the OP, just lay off the alcohol, drink lots of water, get lots of sleep, and walk a little slower and sit down if you feel bad. These towns are not high elevation.
