TOB blocked at Starbucks

18 posts in this topic

Have you noticed that TOB is now blocked in many Starbucks? I've tried logging from at least 3 different ones and now they have a system called Umbrella.com from Cisco, that blocks it saying it's a pornographic site.

Really? Maybe, it should be a chance  to login to other websites I guess?

Re: changing DNS: might not work, depending on how configured on Starbucks/Cisco end. For example, tech note to channel DNS requests through their DNS, even when different servers called out.

Also saw where the product has some deep dive analysis/filtering going on, so, even if get to TOB, once pages start downloading, might get a block.

This is why we have data plans, to get to the fun stuff and not use public wifi.

Since I don't speak that language I'll probably just get my coffee to go although I know a Starbucks in the DTC that I have spent time browsing in with a halfway decent espresso so I think

I’ve had that happen frequently when using public Wi-Fi.  P411 often gets blocked too.  When that happens I just turn off Wi-Fi and use my data plan.

Blocking is a very sad state of affairs.

How so? Free public WiFi is a luxury to the fullest with its own rules set by those doling it out.

I guess I'm ok with SB blocking this site considering every time I go it has kids floating around.  Some guys are discreet but for those who aren't, kids don't need to see some of the photos on here accidentally.

Certain sites such as TOB has been blocked for years by all sorts of retail establishments, company businesses, hospitals, Kaiser Medical, airport free WiFi, etc.

Since it’s free to the public, they do have the right to block certain categories of web sites whether we agree with them or not.

The solution is simple as Bit said above. Simply turn off WiFi on your device and use your data plan.

Using public wi-fi is like going bare back with a sporting lady for your computer.  Pass.

Always use a VPN... otherwise who ever owns the wifi can not only block you from accessing certain sites but also snoop on what you are doing. In a worst case this could be acquired (with a warrant) by law enforcement. This is of course true of not only Starbucks but hotel WiFi too.

I recommend hot spot shield. They are the only VPN that has never handed over records to authorities I believe.

started happening at airports too.  i'm in a different one every week and noticed a little while back that they were all slowly coming on board with parental controls...

used my carrier for a bit, then bought a mifi - ironically the default settings are unsecured wifi - but with three quick clicks you can 'enable secure wireless security' function - so far this thing rocks...

now can LE get what they want anytime when it comes to this data - my guess is they absolutely can at a certain level - but really what is it that i've done here - just a member of a little community that believes in the therapy of an online NSA dating community - one where i can find like minded folks who enjoy the same type of dating i do - so i don't have to go make out to be something i'm not in the RW to get to the same place.

I have an unlimited data plan so screw public wifi. I rarely,  if ever, connect to public wifi. I only do.if I dont have cell service and I really need to look something up.

Allegro is good coffee.  Another local favorite of mine is Novo.  No dark roasts (which doesn't fit for everyone), so no over roasting to hide any flaws in the beans.
