Scammer's Gender May Sometimes be Unclear

20 posts in this topic

This is an experience that I had approximately six months ago.  For a few agonizing moments I was falling prey to what turned out to be a common internet scam.  I will relate the story, but first I want to say that this situation somewhat parallels another thread in which the actual gender of the suspected perp was...  ambiguous.

Last spring, on a social media site where hookups are the norm, one young lady responded to me there.  We chatted, we exchanged numbers and then moved to texting.  Incidentally, the area code was not from Colorado.  80... something.

This woman stated that she was eighteen.  G -rated pics were provided, followed by R, then X.  Naturally, I responded in kind.

The following evening I receive a text message from the girl:  "I have a confession to make - I am actually 17.  My 18th birthday is still a year away..."  On learning this, I cooled my stance, suggesting that we pick it back up in 12 months.

On the third evening, a phone call comes in from the girl's number, which I answered.  The voice on the other end sounded like an agitated mother.  The mother was distraught that a stranger (yours truly) has sent an indecent pic to her precious underage daughter.

"Ma'am, I am very sorry.  At the time the picture was sent, I believed your daughter was 18 and it was only afterwards that she revealed to me she was not yet 18..." My heart was pounding.

"Sir, I am not a 'ma'am, I am a SIR!"  (This is the gender confusion part).  The girl's teacher had reportedly discovered the naughty pics and called the parents.  It was the "father" calling me.

In the "father's" distress, he had reportedly destroyed his own phone thinking that his was the daughter's phone. And he was ready to report me to the authorities.  Frightened of any impending consequence, I offered to meet the man to provide reimbursement for the damaged phone only to get into this distraught father's good graces as well as to let him see that I was a nice guy, not a shady scumbag.  I did not even occur to me to ask WHAT CITY he was located in!

Long story short... rather than simply meet me to receive a cash payment of $300 for the damaged phone, this scam artist tried to get me to go to the nearest CVS to load the funds onto his prepaid card instead.  He said did not want to meet a stranger at night, especially a pervert.  Besides, his wife was upset, trembling (they were both trembling), and they planned to go church in the morning.  So I was to call him from the CVS parking lot to receive instructions on loading $300 onto his account.  By this time, my stainless steel investigative mind kicked in to figure it all out.  This was a scam.  Later on, I found many variations of this scam described in online blogs.  One blog described an incident which had even led to a man's suicide, though this detail could very well be fake.  Who knows?

The thing is, the voice on the other end, the whole time, sounded very... eerily androgynous.  As though it was some degree male, some degree female, and a little bit of either.   That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  😃

Man...how old are you? The take away from your story shouldn't be there was possibly an androgynous person on the other end. I'm still a little confused as to why that part mattered...but the take away is you sound like a skeevy person. Dick pics to a barely legal teen?? Come on, dude.

I try not to immediately jump on someone when they share here but goddamn, man. This whole story is just weird from every single angle. All angles. Every angle possible.

For the elements of the discussion that you appear to have missed, you might want ro go back & re read the OP to obtain your answer.

This was a scam, no one was harmed.  It wasn't real, though I was told that the girl (who likely did not even exist) was 18, then she suddenly was "not 18."

Are you married?   Over 50% of the gents here are, some with families.  You can think about what takes place minute by minute on a site such as this one and your take away from my post can be whatever you need it to be to keep your opinion of yourself high and holy.

Oh i get it was a scam. That's clear. A scam you got sucked into because you sent dick pics to a "woman" you thought was 18 which should've been an instant red flag if she explicitly stated as such or if you had to ask "are you 18?" Either way, as you said, you responded in kind to "her" nudes with nudes of your own. So maybe it was a dude on the other end instead of a barely legal teen that then said they were underage leading to a phone call and extreme panic on your end and almost dumping $300 to cover the cost of a "broken phone" only to realize it was a scam after they gave you explicit instructions on how to give them the funds...I think i got it all squared away...LOL! I'm done with this one.

I’ve got to side with JD on this one. WTF? Sending X-rated pictures to a stranger, regardless of their age? Ever watch ‘60 Minutes’ and their pedophile traps?  You’re lucky they just wanted $s.

I’m siding with JD and BIt on this as well.

I’m assuming you are at least 40yo and you were corresponding with a person who you thought was 18.

18...that is creepy and sleazy. Even more so since I am under the impression you are mature person who is at least 40, if not 50 or 60.

This is as bad as the other thread where the guy was concerned that he got involved in a felony but wouldn’t say what the issue was leading us all to wonder.

For the last time... I was given the information that "she" was 18 before the scam unfolded.  Can I assume that anyone here has above a 9th grade reading comprehension level?  The reason why this age switch technique was being used is likely because most guys will end communication if there is an underage female involved. I even met with a beautiful 19 year old provider from TOB for companionship.  LOL  Aren't we splitting hairs here???

As for dick pics, a 30 something woman with FF boobs once hopped a plane to Denver back in the day for a long weekend of fun, costing me nothing other than food and entertainment.  Admittedly, this was some time ago.

I've met ladies on the social site in question as well as on other sites, women from ages 20 on up to late 40's.  Gifts were given and fun was had.  It is ironic and comical how, with guys cheating on their wives with escorts - in addition to all of the secrecy & fear of getting busted - can have this level of judgment.

Frankly, I would not trade my rich experiences for anything.  Least of all, for the approval of a few self righteous hypocrites who regularly (and allegedly) test the limits of the law.  : )

RJ, I’m more concerned about your  blithely sexting a stranger.  You should aware be that the law doesn’t care if you stop when they tell you they’re underage.  You’re already set up for the sex offender list.

A police officer, friend of a friend, going through a rough divorce starts chatting with the YL sitting next to him at a bar.  They drink together until closing time, then adjourn to his place for adult games.  The next morning her mother files charges because the gal was too young.  Now he has to report to a parole officer for the rest of his life, despite the expectation that she was old enough to be drinking at the bar.

One of the many reasons I avoid youthful providers is the not so subtle legal difference between being a john & a pedophile.  Why take a chance?

EDIT:

Sexting with known friends,ie folks with whom you’ve shared BCD time - that’s a different story.

I don't know why you all are so surprised at anything coming from the OP.  You should know that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the Crossroads.

 Okay, okay guys, I understand that you don't sext with a YL you do not know well.  Was just sharing what I considered to he an interesting & scary experience for the purpose of entertainment & discussion.  Sorry to have ruffled some feathers.  I have since removed my presence from that particular site  -  it has served its purpose.  Now I am limiting myself to cruising the shopping malls.

I'm still confused about the androgynous voice part... Why does that even matter???

Hi Cecillia,

Only because on another thread there had been some talk about mysterious (& malicious) phone calls from a "woman" & I just wanted to point out that one cannot always be 100% certain of gender based on the sound of a caller's voice.

I won’t exchange photos or be involved with anyone that does exchange photos. I’ve been caught in scams doing this and it can be quite disruptive to your life.
