Libertarian Party Adopts New Sex Work Plank, Becomes Only Notable U.S. Party to Endorse Prostitution Decriminalization

The LP's move comes the same week the Green Party explicitly rejected a platform that protects sex worker rights.

No if you know airamericavet65, you'd discover he's a New Libertarian, just look at his handle. He's a right nice and proper man too. Met him several times. He's great to break bread with.

Hell yeah!!!! I’ve been a libertarian for years now! Still carry my republican voter registration, but libertarians are more well rounded. I’m a firm believer that the government has no business in my business! My vagina, my choice if I choose to sell it! Same with taxes! Just say no to income tax!

I mean, the party platform also calls for a repeal of the civil rights act, so there's that. Dangerous to be a single issue voter.

There’s that. But what do you do when the two major parties make you want to hurl? Abstain?

I have been a part of this state's Libertarian Party committee. The normal LP platform has included protecting sex workers for many years.

At least ten years ago, the LP was called the 'Sex, drugs and Rock-n-Roll' party.  :)

Libertarians, being fiercely opposed to any kind of command and control, are very difficult to mobilize en masse. The sentiment is totally consistent with Liberty principles, but electing someone is notoriously difficult for Libertarians so pure as to be party members. Plenty of libertarians in other parties, but they have competing agendas due to affiliation.

Damn that sounds academic. Sorry.

There's a lot of ground to cover between abstaining and voting in Jim Crow.

" Libertarians embrace the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights. We reject the idea that a natural right can ever impose an obligation upon others to fulfill that “right.” We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant. Government should neither deny nor abridge any individual’s human right based upon sex, wealth, ethnicity, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference or sexual orientation. Members of private organizations retain their rights to set whatever standards of association they deem appropriate, and individuals are free to respond with ostracism, boycotts and other free-market solutions. "

They'd happily allow you to discriminate against customers and employees for whatever reason you want. Maybe prostitution would be legal, but no one will bat an eye when a woman can't get hired because she may decide to have a kid. Or, ya know, the old stand by of not being white. Then, when she's not hired, we can kick her in the teeth:

" We favor a free-market health care system. We recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want (if any), the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions. People should be free to purchase health insurance across state lines. "

No job means she ain't buying 'free market' healthcare.

Oh, and also, your neighbor can build a little mini nuclear reactor in his backyard. You have no recourse, unless it melts down. Then I suppose your estate could sue him.

" As respect for property rights is fundamental to maintaining a free and prosperous society, it follows that the freedom to contract to obtain, retain, profit from, manage, or dispose of one’s property must also be upheld. Libertarians would free property owners from government restrictions on their rights to control and enjoy their property, as long as their choices do not harm or infringe on the rights of others. Eminent domain, civil asset forfeiture, governmental limits on profits, governmental production mandates, and governmental controls on prices of goods and services (including wages, rents, and interest) are abridgements of such fundamental rights. For voluntary dealings among private entities, parties should be free to choose with whom they trade and set whatever trade terms are mutually agreeable. "

" Competitive free markets and property rights stimulate the technological innovations and behavioral changes required to protect our environment and ecosystems. Private landowners and conservation groups have a vested interest in maintaining natural resources. Governments are unaccountable for damage done to our environment and have a terrible track record when it comes to environmental protection. Protecting the environment requires a clear definition and enforcement of individual rights and responsibilities regarding resources like land, water, air, and wildlife. Where damages can be proven and quantified in a court of law, restitution to the injured parties must be required.

And before anyone suggests that's impossible, check out this former boyscout- Home Made Reactor

And that's just a few of the things the platform advocates. There's so much more, so many terrible ideas. All quotes are taken directly from the platform listed on their webpage. Donald Trump is the worst thing to happen to this country in a generation only because we haven't elected a libertarian government.

... except for the wealth re-distribution policies of his predecessor.(IMHO)

The basic tenet of Libertarians is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.  We should NOT have a nanny state controlling every aspect of our lives.

There’s an argument I used to have with my grandfather. I contended that this country was built on voluntary socialism, controlled not by The State, but rather by local church groups. Granted, if you didn’t subscribe to their dogma, you were left sucking hind teat.  Now these needs are met by The State, complete with the requirement to subscribe to their dogma.  Socialism is no longer voluntary, but coerced through taxes.

There are government services which are more cost effective to provide collectively. Fire protection used to be provided by your insurance company. National defense is another.  But the massive amount of social intervention of the Progressive movement beginning with McKinley & Roosevelt has perverted the limited Federal government the Founders established.

I realize this discussion has veered into politics, which can be fraught with heated arguments.  Let’s try to keep it a civil discourse.  Peace.

Once a thread goes off topic and gets closed there is no discourse. it's just best to stay on topic or start a new thread.

I read awhile ago that California has decriminalized prostitution for under age girls too. I am so glad that I moved away from that state years ago.

You heard way wrong. California changed the laws so that minors are treated as victims instead of criminals. Prostitution is still very illegal in the state for all. It’s just trying to work it so kids caught up in trafficking aren’t subjected to the same punishments are their adults counterparts.

There is an assumption that they are “victims”, trafficked and therefore not liable for their actions.
