If you don't have a VPN

Rachel, this is probably one of the best organized and most useful posts I have yet seen since this mess started. Thank you...

Indeed a very good post. Very briefly, a VPN is like a tunnel for your internet traffic. In most cases, location and website details are hidden and cannot be viewed by your internet service provider.

If a VPN is too technical for some folks, or do not want to pay, another alternative is the TOR Browser. I'll spare you the details but it is essentially like a VPN built into a browser that's just like any other web browser. It too hides your actual location and the websites you access. You may have heard of the "dark web" and TOR is how you access it. I wont open that pandora's box but you can use it to access regular websites too. Only downside is that it may be a little slow at times and sometimes a website might block access, which is an occupational hazard when using such tools and software.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately my ISP is Comcrap. They keep track of anyone who tries to DL from  Torrent. I received a warning when I tried to access it previously. They have some monitoring software that detects Torrent downloads. Unless I accessed it using a VPN. Would that be like using a double VPN?

If you don't know what a VPN is, neither do I. Ha ha J/K. It is software that you install on your computer/phone. It allows you to connect to a server in almost any country you want before browsing the internet. The best VPN's don't keep logs of which website you visit. A super smart gal went thru all the VPN's and came up with this:

Using the chart at https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-char...

Eliminate all VPNs that are from countries that belong to 14 Eyes
https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/vpn-provider-...

Eliminate all VPNs that log traffic. If it is not logged, it cannot be discovered.

Eliminate al VPS based in Hong Kong and Israel. I do not trust the intelligence organizations.

Then using https://www.vpnmentor.com/ for review information

I am left with

NordVPN, Panama, https://nordvpn.com/, $33/year, 3 year minimum, 4.9/5.0, Ranked 1st from 301 VPNs
https://www.vpnmentor.com/reviews/nordvpn/

Trust.Zone, Seychelles, https://trust.zone/, $39.95/year, 4.6/5.0, Ranked 6th from 301 VPNs
https://www.vpnmentor.com/reviews/trust-zone/

Doublehop, Seychelles, https://www.doublehop.me/, $33/year, 4.0/5.0, Ranked 101st from 301 VPNs
https://www.vpnmentor.com/reviews/doublehop-me/

VPNTunnel, Seychelles, https://vpntunnel.com/, $35.88/year, 4.0/5.0, Ranked 180th from 301 VPNs
https://www.vpnmentor.com/reviews/vpntunnel/

thanks for the info on vpn services. I was trying to decide who to go with because I only use free vpns and they kinda suck.

The issues surrounding torrents are even greater tangle. Torrents themselves aren't illegal but the content that is shared within them, in most cases, is. For instance, if you have a large family spread across the country you could create a torrent to share something, say, like Thanksgiving dinner photos and videos and that isn't illegal.

Again, I'm not certain of the rules but VPNs should be allowed since they're made to increase privacy. I do not believe using a VPN or TOR would raise any red flags as compared to torrents.

Have been a lurker for years but work in the cyber security industry so actually have something of value to add here...

TOR provides just as much anonymity as any VPN, and is free. Was originally developed for folks living in countries with oppressive governments. You can install TOR browsers for just about any OS, mobile platforms included. Check it out here: https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

If you're want to take it to the next level, check out "tails" https://tails.boum.org

It's a full bootable Linux OS that runs off a thumb drive.  Comes with TOR preconfigured and leaves zero trace of anything on your computer.

Nothing is fool proof, but the only orgs that have the capability and/or motivation to attribute an end user of tails + tor +vpn are nation-state intelligence agencies, and they could care less about what the members here are up to.

Stay safe and hit me up if anyone has more infosec questions!

TOR is pretty slow compared to a paid VPN for me. TOR on a mobile was worse.
