I would name my ATF but I wouldn't want all of the other mountains I've seen to be mad! And isn't this asking for shilling? 😅😅😅

I got a chuckle 😂

I don’t ski or snowboard and probably the reason I’m not in traction 😂

I’m jealous of all of you that do it so well!

Back Country.  Escape the crowds and get some one on one time with the mountain.

So many great places in Colorado to ski!  Telluride, its a little harder to get there, so it's never crowded, great town, food, bars and lots of terrain for every level.  Steamboat is a real western town- great people, easy to get to, not the most challenging terrain, but always a fun ski day at Steamboat.  Crested Butte:  Cool - kinda hippie town- very authentic CO and lots of great skiing- not easy to get there though.  Hope this helps.

My go-to slopes for over 50 years are at Winter Park, actually at Mary Jane.  Reasons:

1.  If you leave early (6:00 a.m. out of Denver)  you can actually park right in front of the lodge and the lift, just like in the old days.  Twenty steps to the lodge, and in the evening, only 20 steps from the bar back to my car.  You can use your car as the locker.

2.  It has the best mountain-side bars ever.  Indeed, at the top of Mary Jane they have a  Bloody Mary Bar set up from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - just the thing to put the mid-day crank back into the turns.

3.  It has a huge variety of terrain, something for everyone.  Usually the snow is as good, if not better, than in Summit County.

4.  Once you get to know the area, you can ski around and never stand in much of a lift line (5 minutes top, even on weekends), but you gotta know when and where to go.  The best way to find these secrets out is to go skiing with the BadBoy.

5.  It's easy to get to - no tunnel traffic coming or going.

6.  If you fill up your car at a Shell station, you can get a two-for-one lift ticket.

7.  Old habits die hard.

BTW, there are no bad ski areas in Colorado, you are essentially picking a favorite from among gems.

I ride now instead of ski so that does slant some of what I look for since I never used to mind traverses to see different terrain but I hate them on a board and prefer places where I can get into and stay all day with varied terrain.

My favorite in CO right now is Crested Butte for local/old ski town feel tons of snow if you hit it right usually around January.  It has some nice area's with bumps/trees to blue groomers all off a few lifts.  This would be a go to for me if I was in your area for anything beyond a day trip.

Old favorite used to be Steamboat which used to feel like Crested Butte but has a more commercial big resort feel now but it's always had awesome trees for riding in the deep. Issue has always been all the traverses that you need to hit to get out of some areas.

Copper is a small mountain with the big resort touches, I probably ride there at least 12 days of the season.  Little to no need for traverses here, it like Winter Park is mostly locals but you do get some tourists.

The last place I skied out of state was Big Mountain, MT which is now Whitefish Resort I only skied it because it's been 20 years since I'd been there but it had tons of snow, loads of terrain and we skied powder in the backbowl all week in February till noon everyday because no one was there!  You're over in Glacier National Park and there were only a few bars so it was just Condo parties at the resort. I'm planning on going back someday but honestly CO is one of the best places in the world to ski or ride so it's tough to leave and with a RMSP+ or EPIC pass you can see plenty of different resorts in CO for cheap(well cheap considering ticket prices now).

Don't do much of it anymore. And I did skiing not snowboarding.

Beaver Creek. It caters to the super wealthy, and they can't be bothered to get out of bed before 10am. Hit the lifts at 8:30 and you'll have the whole mountain to yourself!

I grew up on the Western slope.

Lucy- I remember in Steamboat (back in the days)- I would either spend my day on the Christie lift (really old rickety chair lift) and at a certain point you could jump off the lift and ski down through the trees. I loved it.💖💖 Especially with the fresh powder!!

Another area on the mountain I would ski Down Hurricane after riding the gondola up. Then ride the lift that would take me up to (think it is two lifts) to get you to the top of Storm Peak.Buddy's run- super cruiser slope that i loved. Ski all the way down to the base of the ski area.Remember  skiing  down Heavenly Days- you had to shoot fast the bottom part of the hill to build up speed so you did not have to truck up the freaking hill.Of course there was a few chair lifts involved with my adventure of fun. I also remember the poma lift that was later replaced by a three man chair lift to take you to the very top of Storm Peak. Just sad that the ski areas in Colardo (especially Steamboat) has become so commercialised.😥 What is even more interesting to me is Old Howelson Hill how that place is now has become so commercialised?! What the...??

Yes Steamboat is place of my childhood. Maybe, I am speaking too openly about myself? Oh the hell with it! 😂😂 I miss the old days! I remember the 70's-80's well! Yep! I was damn hot on the slopes! My childhood was spent skiing both Saturdays and Sundays. Did not matter if I was with friends, family, or alone. I had a walkman on my head with Rush,or something else playing. My Rossingnol skis (red white and blue)ST comps! all tuned up, Scott poles with a big grin on my face. I was a spoiled child growing up. Now just magical memories Lucy. My eyes are gone unfortunately. No money. Just lots of walking fast and hard now in life! 😀😀 I am good!!

Jackson Hole is awesome. When I was little I spent a week and stayed in Cody WY.

Was with my parents tonight tried to jog my dad's memory on our family ski adventures. Sometimes my dad will beltout something interesting about our past. Tonight I was not lucky...however he did have a little smile on his face while we traveled the hallway of the nursing home where he stays.  I told him that I have been talking with my friends about my skiing days. Think my talk got him moving a bit faster? Lol don't know. 😃😃 Nothing like some good old fashion fun memories to get the old man trucking.😀😀

I'll be different here - I really like Ski Cooper. Sometimes on week days it can seem like you have the whole place to yourself. You won't get the thrill of some other places, but the enjoyment I get there can't be beat!

Since we have wandered into the "off piste" areas, does anyone else have fond memories of lurking in the trees at the top of the back bowls of Vail until the Ski Patrol Nazis left (around 4:00), and then taking the back-side, out of bounds trail down to the Minturn Country Club for the apres-ski activities?  Such a fun time.

This! Is the gold I'm looking for. Good looking out !

BTW, Lucy, the closest ski area to you (in Canon City) is Monarch Mountain, which is a really neat little ski area, budget friendly, and probably good for snowboarding.  It's only about an hour and a half from you.  Breckinridge is only two hours, and since you will be going the back way, no tunnel!

This advice is NOT for folks who go skiing/boarding as adults. If you have a need for a family ski/board adventure then there is no better place than Granby Ranch (used to be SilverCreek). All the runs return to the same place, they have all types of runs, it is much less expensive that the big places, and it is easy to get there - just pass Winter Park and in 20 miles on flat roads you are there.

The kids can't get lost, the rental is quick, and the folks are friendly.

Sol Vista? I love to ride the chair lift and hike down the mountain. It is located on the opposite side of the road of Grand Elk. It is a very nice little area for beginners to learn and families.

SilverCreek = Sol Vista = Granby Ranch.  Every time it goes bankrupt the new owners give it a new name.
