BitCoin: The New Green Dot Card Scam?

10 posts in this topic

Was reading a review on a different site. Not a lot of detail on what exactly went down, but, reviewer mentioned they backed out of visiting a lady due she only took Bitcoin. Poster went on about not wanting to download apps, buy stuff.

So, I do know what Bitcoin is, have passing knowledge on how transactions work. Which got me wondering: seems pretty easy to scam money from people with Bitcoin ala Green Dot cards, since part of the allure of Bitcoin is a level of anonymity with transactions.

Green Dot: Hey baby, just get the card, then read the number to me, to know your cool and serious about meeting. End result: money pulled from card, never hear from lady again.

Bitcoin: Hey sexy, we need to transfer your Bitcoin payment to me before we meet, to know your cool and serious about meeting. End result: eCurrency transferred, never hear from lady again.

Am I way off base re: this type of scenario? Or not too off and another "let's be careful out there" thing to look out for?

Anything is possible.

That is why it is best to stick with the well known ladies on this board.

Do not pay before the appointment.  That’s just foolish.

Bitcoin has interesting possibilities. But it's more like a stock than currency. Too slow to process for this business. Great for other things you might want. Also, if you don't want to pay a little extra and take a few extra opsec steps, it's really really really easy to trace back to you. Every transaction is posted to a public record.

It's possible to buy it anonymously. You'll pay a premium to do that, though. And it's possible you'll get ripped off in the process.  You can use a vpn to access a wallet to store/transfer it. Gotta be the right vpn, or it's pointless. Transferring it can take a few hours. Then the recipient may or may not rip you off. That's all without considering how volatile the exchange rate is. Today's $100 could be $50 tomorrow, and $1000 next week. Since last month it's value has gone up like 4000%, but it's due for a crash again soon. *Side note- the first bitcoin purchase was a guy buying a pizza. Today's value of that transaction would be in the multi-million level.

It's too much of a headache for this business. But not a bad thing to learn about.

I guess it depends on a few things. One, is the lady legit? Two, where is she mainly advertising? On BP, the easiest way to advertise on it is with a gift card and bitcoin so she might use it to advertise, and that is the easiest way then going through channels to buy some(you lose some money buying bitcoin online).Three, when are you having the money transferred? I have clients come into my place, and then I confirm gift cards, etc. before we get started. If this is for a prebook, then it could be different...I do know ladies that require deposits before prebooking for a city(to keep the clients and herself accountable for an appointment). Mainly, I think it comes down to how long the lady has been around, and her reputation. If she is no one, I would be pretty hesitant. Otherwise, us ladies just try to find easier ways for clients to covertly use their money for this hobby, and it is a good way to do that.

xoxo,

Samantha Sheppard

Bitcoin transactions are only safe to perform with people who you TRUST.  They are anonymous & irreversible.  So yes, someone could absolutely scam you by requesting advance payment via Bitcoin.

That's not to say that all requests for Bitcoin payments are scams.  Bitcoin is a great way to make an advance deposit to a provider who you TRUST.  Many of my trusted regulars voluntarily made advance deposits for my upcoming tour, some of them via Bitcoin.  Bitcoin is my favorite method to take deposits, so I will usually suggest it first and then follow up with other options if someone doesn't want to be bothered with the technology involved.

Also, I totally disagree that Bitcoin is "too slow" for use in our industry.  With the correct network fee paid by your wallet, transactions can complete in a matter of minutes.  For me it's been incredibly useful.  I accepted a $300 advance deposit via Bitcoin TWO WEEKS ago and it's now worth $450.  Most escort ad venues accept Bitcoin as payment for advertising, so I basically am getting 50% more bang for my buck just because I'm dealing in Bitcoin.

True enough that it's volatile.  But the trend is very strongly established as increasing & as long as you're not budgeting dollars and change, either accepting & using Bitcoin quickly or holding it as an investment are both super practical for providers IMO.  The only thing that it really doesn't work as is an alternative bank account.  Wouldn't want to have my "rent money" sitting around in Bitcoin.
