The demise of porno theaters.

26 posts in this topic

Nice article and pretty accurate. How many of you remember the Kitty movie theaters or Galaxy here in Denver ?? In the pre-VHS years,I used to take a notebook with me into those theaters to take notes and write adult movie reviews for the Oyster. Interviewed Marilyn Chambers for the first time in the back of the Kittys on Alameda and Harry Reems at the Kittys on Broadway. Of course the Colfax location was legendary. The Alameda location was the biggest,it used to be a vaudeville house . Went to the Pussycat in the article a  for premieres and watched some of porns golden age finest put their hands in cement. Ok, now you're making me wanting to dig out those old pictures.

Eventually, low overhead online stores will make most brick and mortars extinct except for food stores.

Amazon is encroaching on the food market, too. My wife used to order cases of UHT milk for cooking. They  currently plan to purchase Whole Foods. (WSJ article)

As already noted.amazon is moving into the food industry.  Will bet that the brick and motors used the most in the future will be in the medical industry.

Kitty's on Colfax was my first ever porn shop visit. Three drunk teenagers did not know whether we should sit next to each other in the theater or not. ;)

Pre-Oyster, when "Deep Throat' was all the rage to see.  All of the hot waitresses on the lunch shift at the restaurant/bar I worked at asked me to be their bodyguard/escort  to Kittys to watch it.  Saw the same cashier there every time. He must have thought I was a young stud. ( took the girls there one at a time )

They used to show porn up at the CU campus in Boulder in '78. Half of my dorm floor went to see Deep Throat at that huge Psych 101 hall. Also saw Misty Beethoven at another building in that square outside the UMC.

I was there for that showing!!!!  I was in Willy Villy at the time, making my daily trek to the engineering building.

Now I wonder if we know each other!  LOL. Oh, the memories.

Is the "Dark Horse" still there?

Funny. We might have attended some engineering classes together. The Dark Horse has long gone the way of the Blue Note.

I wonder what would happen if they tried to show porn there now? An army of SJW's and Antifa would probably show up and start tossing bottles. ;)

Just saw a facebook page and a website for The Dark Horse. Fond memories of that club. what made you say it was history ??  http://darkhorsebar.com/

As for CU, in the mid 90s they carried the Oyster and had myself ,usually with a porn star or two in tow, do a show and tell on porn for about 5 years. For some strange reason..we always had an overflow crowd.

No kidding - that was my first strip club, about 30 years ago.  Haven't been up that way in so long, just assumed it had closed like all of my other Boulder haunts.  Never will forget the gorgeous, young, Boulder girls working there.  Even remember the most popular tune for the gals to strip to:

Assuming is a bad boy thing to do . dark horse and Bus Stop are alive and well. The only Boulder strip club to close was Uncle Grumpys. I was the DJ there from the last couple months it was the Olympic and all 5 yrs it was Uncle Grumpys. Its now a Best Buy.

No way man, they tore it down the year after they dismantled the Flatirons. ;)

I could have sworn they demolished the original, but maybe time to check in to the old folks farm....

Re: Bustop: Nope, not demolished, just gone through several guttings over the years.

The original single stage was replaced with multiple smaller stages. Pool and poker tables removed. Smoking room put in, then removed with state smoking ban. Nude side added. And now back to one stage and a bigger bar on the booze side of the biz.

Now, Bellas(?) in Longmont is gone. Same owner of current Nitro on Pearl St mall. Same guy that tried to sneak past city council a strip club at the current Harpo's location in Boulder (former Hooters locale, and Big Boy before that if recalling correctly).

Been years since i was in the Bus Stop.  I think it was in it's last iteration where they'd split the building. I still remember getting my first lap dance from a beautiful brunette in a gold thong.. YEARS ago.. but damn if that visual isn't still fresh.

I remember in college seeing a classmate who worked there as a waitress. Some guy made an ass out of himself and was carted out in cuffs right in front of her. Not sure if she worked there much longer but I tried being polite while I was there. But what the hell do you say, "Did you finish the assignment from Professor so in so? " Hell no. Ah but those days are gone for Boulder though...

Not local but Ghost Adventures did an episode at Market Street Cinema in San Francisco. Even if you don't believe in ghosts in a neat little history about the place and a look at the building which is fucking scary haunted or not. Zak Bagans has a thing for painted ladies they've visited lots of locations supposedly haunted by prostitutes.

Since I wasn't alive I can only enjoy pictures and others memories. The 1983 movie Variety was about a woman who worked the ticket booth at a porn theater in Times Square. It's some of the better glimpses that you'll get of the height of porn theaters.

Yeah and Mc Donald's now has delivery with Uber along with several other places. So if you're favorite place doesn't deliver, have uber delivery bring it. So much for minimum wage increase.

As for the old theaters, I snuck into one when I was in high school. It was the creepiest dang thing ever at the time. Still the nostalgia of it and things like the famous o'farells in San Francisco or hell the old time casinos in Vegas are slowly becoming a thing of the past.

I lived in SF in the late 80's and made the rounds of most of them and I worked at the Century theatre for about a year.

The one thing that all the old(er) theatres had in common was a sense of tawdriness and desperation; and I include the Mitchell Bros O'Farrell Theatre in that, most definitely. It was a beautiful building with a very cool mural on one side, but the inside was cloying and sad.

My favorite was the Strand. It wasn't strictly a porno theater, per se; but they did have some odd porn(Johnny Wad in 3D...)from time to time, in addition to an eclectic mix of others. Wooden seats, and smoking in the balcony, what could possibly go wrong? ;-)

Another Arnett Hall resident and engineer here!!  A few years earlier. My there were some naughty, naughty coeds next door in Buckingham and Smith Halls!! Early 70's there were screenings of movies like "I am Curious Yellow" in the student center complex - chem building I think. Formative years spent at the Tule and the "Rat Cellar" the Sink and Devil's Thumb.

A lot of the local strip clubs have closed just long enough to remodel .severaal years ago the PTs on Evans did it for a month.New insides looked a helluva lot better. Cheerleaders did a big faceleft and became Players, same owner.  The original Shotgun Willies was demolished a few months after the new one ( in the former back parking lot ) was opened. Haven't been in the old Saturdays yet, since it was remodled into the PTs Nude Club 2..

Went to the Mitchell Bros O'Farrell Theatre during a one week vacation to  San Francisco long long ago. Met Jim and Artie the year before they became the Cain and Abel of porn.

I worked the flat grill at the Sink when it was called Herbie's Deli.

There was a porn shop in central Boulder near the park with the band shell. I believe it was a nice wooden house originally. Across from the justice center on Canyon there was also a porn shop and it was rumored you could pay to play there too.
