Ok so I can't just ask my dentist this question.

I have my very first cavity ever annnd I have to get a root canal it's so bad. My questions for those with experience in this matter is, how much pain should I expect and more importantly, how long before I can start giving French again?

Answering your second question first:  The tooth will be sealed, but other parts of your mouth may be roughed up.  Safety wise I'd say at least 24 hours....but trust me....you won't want anything in your mouth tougher than oatmeal for a few days.

Pain-wise....is it an incisor or molar? I've had both. The molars are worse...more nerves and harder to get to.  Almost any competent dentist can control pain during the procedure.  Afterwards, you'll feel like you've gone a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson.

Glad to see you have your priorities straight. 😊

Never had a root canal so I can't comment on the pain.

I've heard different stories from friends about lots of pain but in my own experience I was as good as new in a couple of days. If your dentist knows what he is doing you should be back to your award winning ways in a couple of days I would think.

Depends on the tooth.  Front with one or two roots not that big a deal.  Molar with multiple roots and oddly configured, gonna hurt lots more.  Dentist should do a temporary filling or cap until they know they got all the root(s) first time.  They should give you some pain meds to go home with.  Pretty sore for two maybe three days if they got all.  No reason to avoid oral except for pain AFTER it is done.  With open cavity .... should cease without cover.  IMHO.  I am not a dentist, but been there had that. (And why can't you ask dentist lol? Too shy right ?? :P)

I had a double root canal on the back two teeth, right side top and 2 years ago.  No fun at all.  However, the pain leading up to the procedure was much worse then the pain later. Probably 3 days until I was feeling myself.

Long story but because of a crappy dentist I had to have 6 teeth pulled, they were broken. I  can still eat food and other things, no problem! Anyhow, if it is a tooth that doesn't show just makeup him pull it and get it over with. I have had friends that have root canals and they fail in a couple of years. Every dentist on the board is going to not like me now but whatever.

P.s. hope your video went well.

Maybe I am lucky, maybe I just have a good dentist, but I found the root canals to be a lot less pain, etc., that I was lead to believe.  It was a lot less than having an extraction.  In my case when the novicain wore off, I took a couple Advil, went to bed and the next day I was fine.  Remember, a root canal ends with a totally sealed tooth, there are no open wounds, etc., in your mouth.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I think I would take a couple days off from oral pleasures, but let your pain be your guide.

Why not ask the dentist (with a wink!)  I'll say like most everyone else has that its probably 3-4 days off.  Advil helps to keep any swelling down of course.

The dentist I see is up near you, and does something called biomimetic dentistry, where instead of one big blob of cap put on, they do layers upon layers like a natural tooth which was neat.

Had RC

Had a headache six months later.

Had MRI.

Was told I either had BC or a tomor.

Had surgery. Culture showed it was a brain abscess. After six weeks on antibiotics the oral sergen removed most of my back teeth.

Had learn to read and write again.  Piece of cake.

As respectfully yet clearly as I can put this: bullshit. Never give up a natural tooth until there is no option, and you (Melissa) are waaaay too young to casually give up teeth.  The fake replacements do not compare in function - unless you are well to do enough to spring for implants.  I have had root canal teeth last many, many years.  They will want to do a crown later, but that is still natural anchor.  Once you let a lazy dentist or a cheap insurance company yank teeth there is no going back. Just my opinion, worth almost as much as paid for (but based on experience).

I would be really surprised that you need a root canal due to a cavity.  But if you've been in a lot of pain before seeing a dentist, then that's not unusual.. the pain is because bacteria has gotten into the pulp cavity and to the nerve inside the tooth.

I highly highly recommend you have a root-canal specialist do the root canal.  Have your dentist drill and do a pulpectomy (remove the inflamed pulp cavity), then put a temporary filling, then go to a specialist (oral surgeon) who does only root canals.  They have better equipment and experience for the job and will get _all_ of the nerve out of the canals all the way down to the bone.  The difference in pain you'll feel afterwords will be less than a day versus many days.  And if the dentist doesn't get all the nerve (happened to a couple friends), you'll be in pain a lot longer and still risk an abscess, which means you'll lose the tooth completely a little later.  One friend lost the tooth anyway and now has an implant (more pain and $$$).  The oral surgeon is a bit more expensive, but the risk of losing the tooth completely is much lower.

You'll still need a crown to get the tooth back to being a what it was, but you can start performing French the next day if all goes well.

It's a molar on the bottom right and the pain is awful.  have to have iv sedation because I freaked out over x rays. have hated the dentist since I was 16 and my drunk dentist pulled a wisdom tooth without Novocain. So, haven't gone to the dentist in 19 years. My dentist now said my teeth are in better condition than a lot of his regular patients. Go sonicare toothbrush and water pic.

So, I am anticipating a lot of pain. They are doing a crown buildup as well. The pain can't be any worse than the stabbing pain I have now. Oh and I have to wait til the 13th....happy happy 😊

I've had several root canals. Hardly any pain afterwards because the nerves are gone; lots of pain before hand. Use an ice pack for the 1st 24hrs. Most of the pain is due to swelling, which the ice pack alleviates.

The pain is not that bad. As one other mentioned the inside of your mouth may be a little mangled. They normally have to do some shots in your cheek and/or gum to numb the nerves. It may be a little raw, and you won't want bacteria to get in there. I would give it a few days. The good news is that the mouth seems to heal fairly quick. Good luck!

Melissa

I have had three root canals..Audry is right the dentist will give you shots that will be uncomfortable until the medication releases. There is a yoga exercise I often do. Lift one of your legs up in the air and make the 👌sign with your power hand. Slightly pinching the skin with your pointer finger. I do this for the dentist as well as for when I have blood drawn, shots (medical doctor) too.

I'm sorry you have to have a root canal and it's causing you so much pain. Had to chuckle though that you're concerned about wait times before you can start giving oral😉

May least you have your priorities in order!

Seems like there should be some way to parlay this unfortunate situation into a "Root Canal Special"....no idea what that might entail.....just that it would be a non oral thing. I mean....sometimes nature causes ladies to have a "mouthing off special".....no reason not to do her the other way around.

Melissa.... I've had two root canals and the fear before far outweighed the actually procedure. Secondly  it is my opinion that many root canal's are done needlessly. P.M.  me and I'll give you something else you might look into.

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Tooth pain is the worst kind to go through. I havn't ever had a root canal, but Ive had a lot of dental work done. If you're anxious about it my dentist gives me volume so I can relax before he even does the work. Hope you get to feeling better soon!!!!

Good vibes xo

Nothing in this world is free... my insurance pays for it though. It helps a lot as I have had several bad dentist who have made it so I get nervous just sitting in the chair!

Melissa, hopefully by now you've had the root canal done and it was painless.

I've had one done and it had to be by a specialist at $1500.

Well worth the cost... no pain during or after the procedure.

And I mean NO PAIN...except in the wallet😄🤣

Melissa, if you have yet to have the procedure done, I recommend a biological root canal treatment instead of the conventional gutta percha treatment. I've had the biological treatment some years ago and am very satisfied with it. I also have peace of mind knowing it is self regulating and healthy.

I have horrible teeth & have had several root canals. It's not fun, but a good dentist will make sure you feel as little pain as possible during the procedure. You can ask for more Novocaine if you have pain and they can usually take care of it. Don't hesitate to ask about how it all works or even to see the tools as they are doing the work if you're into that. For me, the more I know and the more I see, the more comfortable I am. If you take a couple Ibuprofen an hour or two before the procedure, you will feel less pain. Just don't take a blood thinner like Aspirin because that could cause excess bleeding.

As for afterward, I'm usually sore for a couple days, then I'm back to my old self. If you have a temporary crown, then you won't probably won't be able to return to your usual activities if you want to keep it in place. I've knocked a couple off just by biting a hamburger the wrong way. Technically, the temp is only there to hold the space open while the permanent crown is built (it doesn't protect against infection, etc.), but it feels really weird without it. The adhesive they use on the permanent crowns is amazingly strong and is pretty much instantly set. I'd still give it a day or two because your use case is not exactly typical.

No, not til next Thursday. Thanks to everyone who replied and sent PM's. There's a lot of alternative options, but I have to pay for school, so I will suffer with the old fashioned way. Thankfully, I do not have any other dental issues.

I have had both.

a root canal and French. Believe me, the later is much more enjoyable.🤡

I had a root canal AND crown. So it was a weeks long process. But afterwords haven't had a bit of trouble.

And French will be much more fun for the guys than a root canal was for you 😎
