And The Oscar Goes To........

53 posts in this topic

MOONLIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What an ending to one of the most self-congratulatory events in Hollywood. Warren Beatty pulled a Steve Harvey and fooled us all. I am so happy for the Moonlight team and especially Mahershala Ali. And for Viola Davis and her beautiful acceptance speeches. Someone needs to check the best actor envelope because Denzel was robbed and Hollywood needs to stop awarding pricks like Casey Affleck.

I am a cinephile and Oscar night is like my Super Bowl Sunday. Tonight was a great show and fuck up that won't soon be forgotten. Anyone else watch??

It was so crazy. So happy for the Moonlight team. It was so deserved. And all the jokes as a result of that HUGE snafu were really funny.

The peeps from the tour bus were really fun too. Nicole Kidman was genuinely happy to meet and greet all of them. She was already one of my favorites and it was cemented last night after seeing how sweet she was to normal people.

Wouldn't it have been great if we had Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway work for CNN and announce the results of the Presidential Election?

Nope didn't watch. I've decided I am done with ALL awards show because they have all turned too political. I'm sorry but I don't give 2 shits about these entertainers political views. I watch entertainers to be entertained and that's it!

As a part time thespian, have enjoyed the award shows in the past. Both at the event and at home.HOWEVER, I am so annoyed by the racism and uninformed political rants, that this was the first time ever I skipped it. Note to Meryl Streep etc...Mrs Trump is an immigrant.

I think Mr. Trump is the one who needs the reminder that his wives and many family members were immigrants.

It seems contradictory to be annoyed by both the racism and the political statements. And who says they're uninformed?  This year there was a person of color nominated for every acting award. Mahershala Ali was the first Muslim to win an Academy Award. Moonlight won best picture and lucky for you Meryl didn't win so there was no speech (that was the Globes anyways).

It's weird to deny people opinions because of their profession.

They are entitled to their opinion. But do they deserve a national soapbox to spout it? Do they have the experience to be subject experts?

Right, and Mrs Trump is probably an illegal immigrant, which goes to show the rampant hypocrisy of the Czar in Chief. Most of the "illegals" in this country are people like Melania, people who came here on travel or student or work visas and then just stayed around. Which shows that building a wall will do nothing but waste our taxpayer money and further divide us against each other. But it stokes the fear and hatred of a large segment of the more ignorant and ill-informed in our society, so it works for him. I didn't watch the Oscars, but I'm guessing that was closer to Mrs. Streep's point.

We could apply that same logic here but I doubt it would blow over well. Why don't they deserve the platform? I also don't get why so many assume that because you're up there accepting an Oscar that you must have millions in the bank and be part of the Hollywood elite. Ashgar Farhadi from Iran had a decent reason to protest. The best picture winner Moonlight had a budget of 5 million and covered very sensitive subjects acted out and created by people who understand those experiences. It's not as though these people are like dwarves that just pop up out of their entitlement holes encrusted with jewels.

First of all it's PRESIDENT Trump. I never called President Obama Mr. It's disrespectful. Didn't like President Barack Obama in any way, but he was the President of my country and i respected it. Respect it for what it is even if you don't like it.

I turned it off after the red carpet. Their political views bore me and weren't they all moving out of the country. Oh that's right, they wouldn't make as much money. So much for that. Shut up and sing, shut up and act. Just plain shut up! Most of them do not have a clue what their talking about.

Ever notice that Mr Trump always uses the adjective "illegal" when talking about immigration, but his critics don't ??

   Especially at awards shows.

You need to do your homework. She is a naturalized citizen .Also she is the second legal immigrant to become first lady. Can you name the first ?

But we are going off subject...act is all the awards shows lately are getting way too political.

No, you just referred to him by last name only...

"Didn't I read somewhere that just todayObama signed into law or something or another that Planned Parenthood could never be defunded. Ok, so they're now safe. And again let me just say, Trump will not be able to just willy nilly change stuff. He can talk all he wants, but he can't just do anything...."

Funny, it's President Trump; but since you didn't like or agree w/Obama you couldn't even give him the respect of Mr...

I want to make sure I under this correctly…If you are part of a  certain profession you shouldn’t say anything at all because what you’re doing for your job is purely entertainment so I only want to see you entertain. Even when you’re outside of your onscreen roll I only want you to play a very specific part that’s maybe not even a representation of you as a person.

The dictation of when, where, and what people are allowed to say is a slippery slope that few in this thread fail to realize. So what would happen if a swath of people (that aren’t trolls) came on this NATIONAL board and told every escort they should "shut their mouths and open their legs because that’s what they’re supposed to do? It’s not your job to have an opinion. Your job is simply for my benefit.”

It’s easy to look at Hollywood and celebrities as this far off and mythical world while not understanding the same strange rules that we want to apply to them can easily be applied to most of us.

The runniest thing is you don't have to watch it. You're not forced to sit through anything. And as for the argument that it's gotten too political lately is fairly shit. It's always been a political and social affair even if you never noticed. Now that should speaks volumes.

When we are talking "legal immigrants" do we include folks like Martha Washington, who arrived before there were any immigration laws or controls?  Just checking, since we are all immigrants, some lucky enough to have our ancestors arrive before there were immigration laws, others lucky enough to arrive when the immigration policy was "welcome, we could use your skills and energy."

BTW, politically correct folks, don't bother telling me that native americans aren't immigrants - they were just the first immigrants.  If they had practiced a more stringent border control policy, they wouldn't have to worry about pipelines being built through their land.

Wtf? Despite your request to the contrary I'm here to tell you Native Americans are not immigrants, hence the word "native". Your last sentence is too ignorant to address. Enjoy your alternative history.

That's not how that works. They actually migrated from parts of Asia across a no longer present land mass between what is now Siberia and Alaska ~14,000 years ago. The "Native" in the name can be misleading. Indingenous is a better, more appropriate option.

Thanks, I know exactly how it works. It was the US government who coined the phrase "Native American". Everything is misleading when facts are ignored.

Then I don't fully understand your argument, and also don't want to go around in circles about. An immigrant is technically a person who comes from one country to another and permanently lives in that new country. Strip away any negative connotation associated with the word "immigrant" and he's not wrong.

Melissa , you nailed it with this comment. I couldn't have said it better.

I believe the entertainers should stick to entertaining and the politicians can stick to politicking.

Nope you are so wrong on every thing that you wrote here except for one thing and that is I don't have to watch which is exactly what I chose to do. Everyone can have an opinion but they don't have the right to force that opinion on me unless I ask and I didn't so they can just shut the fuck up and except their award and thank all of those asses they kissed and dicks they sucked along the way then sit the fuck down.

The simple fact you had the option to change the channel means it wasn't forced upon you. You weren't held hostage to it. You don't even have to agree with it. But in no way was it forced on anyone. If viewership goes down they'll likely change the formula next year. People can make a stand and let their voices be heard in a number of ways. A greatness afforded to individuals of our country. This is also where the 1st Amendment comes in handy. You can say ALMOST anything you want without recourse from the government, but it doesn't offer up protection against employers. So, if those running the show truly felt it went against their principles they can make a change and in today's constantly connected world instantly let it be known.

But you see Jo , I think the biggest issue I am having with all of these people is this. Nothing , I repeat Nothing that they are saying is going to make a bit of difference. They can piss and moan and groan all they want about Trump and his ideas and policies but it is not going to change Anything. He is in office for the next 4 years like it or not!!!

I don't agree 100% with everthing he is proposing either but the biggest difference between me and most of these other people is this, I am going to live my life for the next 4 years because you don't get any of this time back. All of these obsessed dumbasses are going to waste 4 years of their life and have nothing to show for it.

A lot of people agree with JRWolf et.al.

Viewership in the 18-49 demographic (the target audience, was down 13%.

They're going down the tubes with the NFL.

Prices for advertising just went down.

Ding, ding, ding.  John Doe is correct and BluesBroker makes no sense.  I actually was planning on using the term "Indigenous Peoples" but besides being much harder to spell (even John Doe got it wrong), it is also erroneous, since "Indigenous" is defined as "...originating in of a particular region or country; native..." so it is really no more correct than "Native Americans."  I simply used "Native Americans" to make the point that we are all immigrants on this continent, some luckier than others.

Actually one of the things I learned in earning my Masters Degree in anthropology (focused on the peoples of the American Southwest), and later representing those same people and their tribal governments in Court is that the actual "native" people  historically really only identify with their unique cultural and linguistic grouping (i.e. Dine, Ojibwe, Lakota Oyate, Athabascan, etc.).  The recent propensity for people who descended from these groups to identify as "Native American" is really more to unite and facilitate political objectives rather than evidencing an actual shift in cultural self-awareness.  For example, if you ever ask a Navajo what they are, they will likely respond either with "Dine" or their actual clan identification (although many of them, being remarkably patriotic, will look at you funny and say "American.")

Finally, while John Doe is generally correct, that Asian people crossed over Beringia during the Last Glacial Maximum, we cannot as of today pinpoint the precise time.  Evidence suggests that it was between 13,000 and 16,000 years ago, so 14,000 is a good average, but should be always understood as simply today's best guess.

The point remains, we are all immigrants.

To some degree I actually agree with you on this, but while that may be the case those people are still allowed to use their time as they see fit. I don't agree with nearly anything coming out of the current administration, but that's what we have right now so I have to deal with it. I also don't agree with all the protests, but they're well within their rights to do so. In general I have my thoughts on protests as well but that's a different conversation. So that's where we fall at this moment; everyone is well within their rights whether we agree with it or not...except for the moments they break the law or do something unconstitutional. I mean, you just gotta take the good with the bad. Yes?

Thanks for the correction AND the knowledge drop! And yes, indigenous is incredibly difficult to spell. <- got it right that time though!
