I have been seriously debating getting the ultraviolet machine. Much more accurate. Knock on wood, but I have been lucky so far.

This is just another reason I take money upfront. I will now be checking the strips to make sure they match. Oy Vey!

Being on the other side of the exchange, when I get my fun money from the bank, I check it out right there and make sure that they give me the new $50s with the fancy holograms and crap on it.  I also inspect the bills carefully and make sure that there aren't any marks, etc., on it.  I just don't want any lady to think I am giving her marked bills.

UV lights and many pens check for residues left behind from detergents used to wash out lower denomination bills. They usually can also detect poor quality bogus that is not printed on rag paper but wood pulp paper. Counterfeiters are becoming more sophisticated and are using bleaches and detergents that leave no residues and high resolution inks that have less texture difference. You best tools are a bright light and cheap but strong magnifying glass. Hold the bill close to the light and read the metal strip inside the bill, which is pretty much impossible to fake up. If you see  USA 100, or USA 50....you are good to go. If there is no strip, or it says something else......you are holding a piece of bogus.

What are the most common denominations counterfeited? I've worked a lot of retail and seen a lot of fake bills but nothing ever larger than twenty. I've always felt that larger bills are safer. Am I fooling myself?

The 9news article listed in the first post states that the most of the counterfeit bills are 50s and 100s.  Which makes sense because the largest denominations are the most profitable to the counterfeiter.

I wonder what is going to be funnier.......the look on the tellers face when I ask for 300 Susan B Anthony dollar coins, or the look on the Escorts face when I hand her the bucket of em.....?

Years ago, I  was paid in  #AlternativeMonies. It was one of the worst feelings ever. The guy came in w 4 100$ bills in an envelope. I glanced in and saw them so I proceeded as ush. He was pushy, (borderline forceful) and just disgusting but was in and out in 20 minutes - TOPS. I thought that's weird, but holy shit I'm glad that's over, went to the envelope to get the mulah, and noticed it felt kinda funny. I couldn't see the strip going down them either. Went down to Panera bread and gave them a bs story about how I just sold something on Craigslist and I think the guy gave me fake money and asked  if I could borrow their pen. They marked them and to my surprise, they passed the pen test. I was asking her to hold them up to see if she could spot the strip, when another employee chimed in and enlightened us on the scam. He took one of the hundreds, got his fingers wet and rubbed off one of the 100$ signs in the corner and a 1$ sign quickly appeared. I don't know much about #AlternitiveMoney, but I thought that was pretty fucking elaborate scheme. I hope Karma found that bastard!

To this day, I'm kind of turned off by the whole envelope thing...

Yeah that one definitely scarred me. Four fucking dollars were made! (See what I did there? 😂) Not cool. When I look back on my  experiences in this life though, I do think I am blessed to be able to call that particular  Rendezvous my lowest moment. I've heard of a lot crazier things happening, that's for sure!

I have no direct knowledge, but wouldn't counterfeit bills all have the same serial numbers?

I've always been told the best way is to hold larger bills ( $20-50-100) to a strong light and a magnifying lens to look for the vertical stripe with the denomination as a written word.

As others have mentioned, the nylon strip with the denomination value down the left-side of the bill is a great way to see if funny money.

Also, mentioned, the holograms are really difficult to replicate.

And not mentioned: the watermarks on the bills are difficult to replicate.
